Low Powered Laser

Phototherapy is an effective, non-invasive, drug-free solution that has no known side effects. It has been used as a means for reducing pain and speeding healing for over 30 years. Low powered lasers provide highly effective treatment which increases local microcirculation: accelerates tissue repair, reduces pain, decreases inflammation/edema, and enhances immune response and angiogenesis.

Electrotherapy is the use of electrical energy as a medical treatment.

Electrotherapy is primarily used in physical therapy for relaxation of muscle spasms, prevention and retardation of disuse atrophy, increase of local blood circulation, muscle rehabilitation and re-education electrical muscle stimulation. Electrotherapy works to maintain and increase range of motion, management of acute and chronic pain.

Interferential Current therapy (IFC) is one of various types and most common forms of electrical therapy used in medical rehabilitation facilities. It uses a mid-frequency (4,000Hz) electrical signal to treat muscular spasms and strains. The current produces a massaging effect over the affected area at periodic intervals, and this stimulates the secretion of endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers, thus relaxing strained muscles and promoting soft-tissue healing. Many patients believe Interferential current is similar to a TENS machine however, IFC produces a higher frequency waveform than a TENS unit (125Hz). The high frequency carrier waveform penetrates the skin more deeply than a regular TENS unit, with less user discomfort for a given level of stimulation resulting in a better overall treatment.

Ultrasound is applied using a transducer or applicator that is in direct contact with the patient’s skin. Gel is used on all surfaces of the head to reduce friction and assist transmission of the ultrasonic waves. Therapeutic ultrasound in physical therapy is alternating compression and rarefaction of sound waves with a frequency of >20,000 cycles/second. Therapeutic ultrasound frequency used is 0.7 to 3.3 MHz. Maximum energy absorption in soft tissue occurs from 2 to 5 cm. Intensity decreases as the waves penetrate deeper. They are absorbed primarily by connective tissue, tendons, and fascia (and also by scar tissue).

Ultrasound is commonly used to treat many conditions such as: Ligament Sprains, Muscle Strains, Tendonitis, Joint Inflammation, Plantar Fasciitis, Metatarsalgia, Facet Irritation, Impingement Syndrome, Bursitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, and Scar Tissue Adhesion.

Benefits of Ultrasound

There are three primary benefits to ultrasound. The first is the speeding up of the healing process from the increase in blood flow in the treated area. The second is the decrease in pain from the reduction of swelling and edema. The third is the gentle massage of muscles tendons and/ or ligaments in the treated area because no strain is added and any scar tissue is softened. These three benefits are achieved by two main effects of therapeutic ultrasound. The two types of effects are: thermal and non thermal effects. Thermal effects are due to the absorption of the sound waves. Non thermal effects are from cavitation, microstreaming and acoustic streaming.
